Why Do We Age?

Why do we age? – Aging is natural.

It’s a complex process that affects every cell and organ and bodily function.

When we age our blood vessels lose flexibility which causes hardening of the arteries, also known as arteriosclerosis. We have reduced nutrient absorption due to declining production of digestive enzymes and we also have a smaller breathing capacity which reduces the amount of oxygen we take in.

But why do we age? Why do some people age faster or slower and in different ways than others?

Can research and knowledge of aging and longevity be used to fight the diseases and disabilities associated with old age?

Can we, as humans, improve our odds of being healthy, active, and independent and do it later into life. Can we actually increase our life span and slow the aging process.

1. Diseases and Disabilities

Aging increases our susceptibility to disease and increases the severity of the illnesses we contract as we approach our later years. Reaching age 65 means that you have an 88% chance of having at least one chronic health condition.

Many of our everyday behaviors are damaging to our health including: Tobacco use, Sedentary lifestyle, and Poor eating habits.

These lead us down the path to the nation’s leading chronic diseases:

- Arthritis
- Alzheimers
- Cardiovascular disease
- Cancer
- Diabetes
- High blood pressure
- Osteoporosis.

2. How we age – the Mechanisms of Aging

Not everything is known about how and why we age. Some believe we have a programmed timetable that determines our lifespan. Others believe it’s just the wear and tear of time and our environment attacking our bodies.

Cellular research has come up with the following hypotheses of aging:

a. DNA Damage/Repair

DNA is a set of instructions that our cells use to function They are as critical to a cell as our brain is to us. Every day there are up to a million assaults on our bodies at the cellular level that can damage the DNA. These include

Oxidative damage Genetic mistakes or typos during DNA replication Ultraviolet radiation Exposures to toxins

As the mutations and errors accumulate in the DNA it can cause the cell to malfunction, age, and ultimately die.

b. Genetic Regulators of Aging

Genetic Regulators are responsible for interpreting the genetic code – reading the instructions. They can impact a multitude of metabolic processes that can cause dysfunction and aging within the cell. The Regulators control the balance within the cell. They control energy production and cell repair and ultimately cell lifespan.

c. Mitochondrial Functioning

Mitochondria are the “powerplants” of the cell. They take the carbohydrates, fats and proteins and transform them into energy. But they can also produce toxic free radicals during the process. This can damage cell membranes and DNA. As the free radicals accumulate they can contribute to the development of diseases we associate with age such as cancer, arthritis, Alzheimer’s and heart disease.

d. Advanced Glycation End Products (AGE)

As we age, some of the molecules at the cellular level, such as proteins and DNA, cross link with each other. These cross links can be very damaging and they are directly linked to the damaging effects of aging. If the cross links are created when glucose reacts with proteins (glycation) they form permanent disabling cross links that has been shown to contribute to cellular aging. These links are called Advanced Glycation End Products or AGE.

e. Hormone Production

The neuroendocrine system combines the brain, the nervous system and the endocrine system and their ability to produce hormones. With age hormone production declines which can result in the loss of muscle mass, elevations in blood pressure, impaired sugar metabolism, and sleep abnormalities.

So what can we do about it!

3. The Science of Anti-Aging

Scientists have been at work looking for ways to battle the many mechanisms of aging. Here are some of the things that they have come up with.

a. DNA Damage/Repair

Studies have shown that reducing the amount of DNA damage and increasing the cells ability to repair any damage that does occur greatly increases a cells lifespan. Natural nutrients – known as phytonutrients – found in berries, grapes, tea and olive oil have powerful health supporting properties. One of these phytonutrients, resveratrol, can actually modify DNA damage.

b. Genetic Regulators of Aging

Plant polyphenols have been shown to induce genetic regulators of cellular energy including metabolism and longevity. This in turn positively impacts the cellular aging process. A landmark laboratory study conducted in 2006 by Dr. David Sinclair at Harvard Medical School showed that resveratrol positively impacted the harmful effects of a high fat diet on the heart and liver, insulin resistance, and blood-sugar levels. Resveratrol even counteracted the mitochondrial decline seen with cellular aging.

c. Mitochondrial Functioning

Laboratory studies have shown that certain polyphenols help increase production of the Mitochondria within the cell. Increasing these “power plants” gives the cell more energy. Once again, resveratrol was shown to give multiple positive effects through the promotion of mitochondrial health.

d. AGE Accumulation

Once again, recent studies have shown how phytonutrients and polyphenols can limit the formation of the damaging cross links formed within the cell. Resveratrol was once again shown to help by reducing the formation of advanced glycation end products (AGE), thus improving cell health and increasing cell longevity.

e. Healthy Anti-Aging Lifestyle Tips

Now that we know some of the causes of aging and some of the things that can slow it down, it’s time to put it into a formula that we the average person can accomplish.

Simple lifestyle changes along with the addition of some important vitamins and supplements can help us prevent chronic disease and increase our longevity.

Anti-aging is possible.

- Eat a Balanced Diet
- Maintain a Healthy Weight
- Exercise Regularly
- Quit Smoking
- Reduce Stress
- Get plenty of sleep
- Increase your intake of Vitamin B (to reduce stress and support healthy DNA replication), Vitamins C and E (needed for their antioxidant properties which helps slow cellular aging), and Calcium (for healthy bones)
- Add natural bioactive compounds such as Resveratrol for its many anti-aging effects.

The anti-aging industry just won’t let the public keep up. The battle against mortality and aging has been around for centuries, and principle is familiar and in-keeping with the Darwinian Theory on survival. The fittest creatures naturally have bigger chances of surviving, and this is true in terms of both health and beauty. Anti Aging Discoveries in the market today are more focused on good looks that longevity. The media’s take on anti aging discoveries are directly targeted at women who must look their best to succeed in any area of expertise. These anti aging products cluster youth, clear skin, and vitality as the three most important values of beauty. Hence, the topical solutions marketed today promise near elixir-of-life results.

Anti Aging Skin Care

1.    Although exercise is vital to your health and great skin, it won’t change the structure of your skin as it gets older. The look of your skin is determined mostly by genetics and sun exposure.

2.    As you age you need to use both lighter colored cosmetics and lighter hair colors. These are more flattering to your skin tone and can keep you looking and feeling younger.

3.    As you go through menopause, it’s very common to find that the skincare products you once relied on are no longer as effective. For example, the hormonal changes associated with menopause often leave skin feeling drier than before. Try a richer moisturizer to see if it makes a difference.

4.    Contrary to popular belief, sunbeds are not a safer way to tan. Sunbeds emit UVA rays and causing tanning and aging of the skin .They may also be important in the development of melanoma. If you’re using a sunbed, you’re accelerating the aging of your skin and increasing your risk of skin cancer.

5.    Did you know that your lipstick helps your lips look younger and protects them? It’s true. Using lipstick, helps protect your lips from harmful rays. It’s one of the reasons men are more apt to get lip cancer – so men slap on the lip protection!

6.    Don’t forget your eyes! Long-term sun exposure can lead to cataracts and age-related macular degeneration. So as you head out the door, be sure to grab your sunglasses, a wide-brimmed hat, or both!

How to avoid Wrinkles

1.    Quit Smoking: Smoking is extremely injurious to the whole of the body, be it the lungs, the respiratory system or the skin. It makes your skin rough and brittle, and thus leads to wrinkles. Constant smokers are nearly twice as prone to developing wrinkles than non smokers.

2.    Physical Fitness: Your skin can be healthy and young only if your body is physically fit from the inside. You must exercise on a regular basis. You can even opt for yoga. This will relax your body and this will eventually show on your skin, which will become radiant and beautiful.

3.    Avoid Washing Your Face Repeatedly: As opposed to popular belief, repeatedly washing your face is not good for the skin. It sucks the moisture from your skin and dry skin is more prone to wrinkle formation. Besides that, the constant application of cosmetics to clean the face can also have adverse effects on the skin.

4.    Healthy and Nutritional Diet: It is very important to have a balance diet, with adequate vitamins and minerals. If your diet is deficient in any of these vital nutrients, it can result in wrinkles. This will make your face look older than it is.

How to deal with aging

1.    Remember that you are at a different stage in life than your parent. For most of us, development does not stop once we reach adulthood. You are not the same person you were when you were 21. Your parent is not the same person they were when they were your age.

2.    Try to look at their concerns from their perspective. Respect their desire for control and regularity. None of us are comfortable with change and this is even truer with seniors. Remember that the only thing worse than change, is change that you have no control over. Be sure to make your parents feel that they still have some control over their life.

3.    Try to help your parent maintain the highest level of independence for as long as possible. The level of independence you start with will depend on the unique situation of your family. Don’t be afraid to include assistance and decrease the level of independence if necessary.

4.    Have a management plan for the essentials like money management; bills; health plans; and any necessary equipment or modifications.

This means that if a woman has prominent pouting lips, it does not automatically allow her to copy the Angelina Jolie hairstyle. Lips can be factored in later to resolve little details of the hairstyle. But the shape of the lips is not the deal breaker, not even for the Angelina Jolie hairstyle.

Elegant Aging: Growing Deeper, Stronger and Wiser in your Years

Elegant Aging is truly a matter of body, mind, emotion and spirit. When we pay loving attention to those four aspects of our being, we age with elegance and grace. First, let’s look at what we do with the idea of “aging” and “old” in our minds.

Attitudes About Aging

When we were young we wanted to be older, and when we get older we want to be young. What’s wrong with that picture?

Aging is inevitable, and as the saying goes, it’s much better than the alternative. Aging is living; it starts at birth and ends when we die. Anti-aging is actually anti-living. The word “age” comes from the Latin root “alo,” which means “to nourish, to bring up.” More generally, “alo” means to strengthen, increase and advance—to become taller and deeper.

So why not age with elegance, grace and style? Why not make up your mind to strengthen, increase and advance—to become deeper and wiser with every new day, week, month and year?

A Yale study in 2002 demonstrated that, “Thinking positively about getting older extends one’s life by seven-and-one half years—which is more than the longevity gained from low blood pressure or low cholesterol or by maintaining a healthy weight, abstaining from smoking and exercising regularly.” Researcher Becca Levy and associates found that lower body mass, not smoking and regular exercise extended life by one to three years.

This validates what Dr. Paul Pearsall says in his book Superimmunity, “How you feel about your health is more important than what you do about it.”

Stay Connected

Think of the people you know who are vibrant, energetic and productive well into their seventies, eighties and nineties. These are your role models, the elders and sages of your community. Hang around them, notice how they think, eat, act and exercise. Notice what they do in their relationships. You will see that they are not perfect by any means, but they are definitely involved in life.

Unplugging from people and life processes accelerates the decline of health in aging. Stay connected and get involved, and you will find yourself feeling younger and more energetic as a result. This culture that worships youth and beauty will not necessarily welcome you with open arms. Do it anyway. There are more of us elegantly aging today than ever before in human history. We can make a huge positive difference in the world by refusing to buy the negative program about aging and staying fit, happy, productive and involved as long as we possibly can.

One of the best things you can do is find someone to take care of. Perhaps an elderly person or a child in your community could use your help. This is one of the best ways to stay connected and involved. Volunteer your services.

Become Magnificent As You Age

Consider that the aging process is perfectly designed to make you magnificent. Feeling great and doing well when you’re young is the proverbial “piece of cake” (you can eat as many as you like). The reality of the aging process requires that we either get smarter and stronger or we buckle under the weight of a negative aging process. You get to choose!

Use the challenge of aging to become like the oak tree, deeper and stronger with every passing year. Add to that the wisdom of your life experience, and you have the makings of magnificence! The effort it takes for you to stay fit, active and involved is good for you. The effort it takes to stay mentally alert, connected and informed is good for you. If aging weren’t so challenging, we could stay lazy and mediocre and get away with it. So you see, the challenges built in to the aging process are perfectly designed to help you become the best you can possibly be.

And the rewards are tremendous. You know what I’m talking about. You have seen the looks of deep peace and joy in the eyes of those who are aging elegantly. The capacity for love, understanding, peace and compassion are greater as we age, when we make choices that take us in that direction.

Think on these things:

1. No one really dies of “old age,” because it is not an illness. Old age can be a time of joy, freedom and peace.

2. What you have been led to believe about aging is primarily negative. Don’t buy the program.

3. Be a rebel. Be outrageous. Be ecstatically eccentric. Be creative. Be the person you have dreamed of being.

4. Be gentle with yourself as you challenge yourself to do something you’ve never done before. And hang in there.

5. Remember that your body is an amazing self-healing organism. Your capacity for self-healing is far greater than you have been led to believe.

6. Your attitude, your beliefs and daily thoughts about your body, mind and aging process determine your health and well being to a much greater extent than you have ever imagined.

7. Consider what you’ve heard all your life about “the will to live.” We learned as children about people dying when they shouldn’t have because they lacked it. We also learned about people living when they weren’t supposed to because they had it. How strong is your “will to live?” Strengthen it by putting as much joy and love into your life as possible.

8. Start today “finding the good” in yourself and the world around you. This is the absolutely all-time best thing you can do to insure a healthy, happy aging process. Become a Goodfinder and practice the Art of Appreciation.

9. There is no doubt that those who have a strong spiritual faith get sick less often, recover more quickly, and live longer happier lives. We need a positive spiritual belief system as much as we need food, air and water.

10. If you have a strong, uplifting spiritual focus, build and maintain it. If you don’t, start looking until you find the beliefs and practices that work the best for you.

Create A Positive Vision Of Yourself As You Age With Elegance

You know the picture of aging that you don’t want? Loss of mental and physical function, isolation and total painful decline. Not a pretty picture. You do not have to go quietly into that dark night! Yet, if you have a negative program going about aging and don’t take care of yourself, that may be exactly where you end up. So, here’s a better choice:

Establish a vision of your future self smiling, breathing deeply and energetically engaged in your life in multiple ways. See yourself as you want to be. Visualize yourself exercising, eating well, engaged in activities and laughing with friends. Feel the emotions that go with this. Believe it. Make up your mind that is where you’re going. Look forward to it. Expect it.

Get specific and clear about your vision. Set clear goals for your physical, financial, intellectual, emotional and spiritual growth. Keep a journal, and write about your current life as if you had already reached all of your goals. Feel it. See it. This is your capacity to create your own reality. You can do it. You can make it happen. You have everything you need to create the life you want for yourself.
